According to Ask MeFi:

  • Wellington smaller, greener, higher cafe/local band/art etc ratio
  • On the North Island, blackwater rafting at the Waitomo caves
  • Golden Bay area at the north-west tip of the South Island
  • wine country around Queenstown
  • Lake Tekapo in the South Island
  • Take the plane to Stewart Island, not the boat
  • Tunnel Beach (an isolated beach accessed via a tunnel through a headland) and Flagstaff, a high plain above the city

@wine country around Queenstown – is called Gibbston Valley. I’d highly recommend visiting Peregrine. It’s a visually stunning winery and the Pinot Noir is great. If you prefer Sauv Blanc check out Marlborough at the top of the South Island. That’s NZ’s most famous wine region.
